Casa Nueva Vida (“House of New Life”) is founded in
the basement of a local church, with enough space to serve four
families. Casa Nueva Vida is the only homeless shelter in Massachusetts
with an entirely bilingual staff, serving Latino homeless families
consisting of a mother and her children.
1989
The shelter becomes an
independent, non-profit agency, operating seven days a week, 24
hours a day.
1993
Casa Nueva Vida outgrows
the church basement and purchases a beautiful six-family, three-story
Victorian home in Jamaica Plain, MA, increasing capacity from
four to six families
1999
Casa Nueva Vida builds
a major addition to the shelter adding an Annex containing an
Adult Learning Center, a bedroom and
handicap bath and a wheelchair
ramp, increasing capacity from six to seven families.
2001-
2004
Casa Nueva Vida completes an additional expansion to
include an eighth family, opens 2 new rooms to serve a total of
10 families and later adds four new rooms,
increasing capacity
to 14 families.
2005
Casa Nueva Vida completes
another addition, adding a teen center, a state of the art computer
lab/classroom complete, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, enabling
the shelter to serve sixteen families (approximately thirty-two
women and eighty-four children per year). Later this year, with
the help of a grant from the Smith Family
Foundation and the building expertise of KaBoom!
and Computer Associates, approximately
100 employees and volunteers come together to build an ADA (Americans
with Disabilities Act) accessible, state-of-the-art playground
in one day. It’s beautiful!
