Jonathan
Lopez
was selected to become a
Red Sox Scholar.
The program started in 2003 and
awards a select group of 5th
graders. Each year the Red Sox
Foundation awards 25
academically talented but
economically disadvantaged
middle scholars in the Boston
public school system with $5,000
each plus accrued interest. In
Jonathan’s case he will be
receiving $10,000 that will be
directly paid to the college of
his choice. Jonathan will need
to maintain a good academic
standing and be a good citizen.
The selection process started
through an application procedure
where the student had to submit
a series of essays and comments
on various topics such as
education, and future plans. 50
students are selected in to the
next step and interviewed by the
judges. 25 out of the 50
students are finally chosen to
be awarded the scholarship.
On June 8th 2008 during the Red
Sox versus Mariners match the
Red Sox Foundation will be
presenting this award before the
beginning of the game. Jonathan
will have the opportunity to
meet many of the players and be
part of a great presentation at
Fenway Park.
